The Rockies give you two very different weddings, and a line on the map decides which one you get. Here are the venues, the rules, the season, and what it costs.
Canmore sits outside Banff National Park. Banff townsite, Lake Louise and the backcountry lakes sit inside it. That single fact shapes everything about a Rockies wedding, from your guest count to whether your photographer needs a licence.
Inside the park you marry under the Canada National Parks Act: a hard cap of twenty people for a ceremony on public land, no sole use of any spot, acoustic music only. In Canmore, none of that applies, which is why a private estate on Silvertip has so much more freedom than a Moraine Lake shoreline. This guide covers the real venues, the rules, the season, the costs, and a planning timeline.

Park, or Canmore
A ceremony on public land inside Banff National Park is capped at twenty participants, every one of whom needs a park entry pass. You may bring a small arch, a registration table and one chair. No tents, no amplified sound, no generators, and you cannot reserve the spot to yourselves - the public shares it with you.
The famous lakes are therefore better for elopements and photographs than for a real guest list. Canmore, just outside the park boundary, carries none of these limits. That is the practical case for a Canmore venue or a private estate: your guest count, your timeline, your setting.

Where the party stays
A house as the base
The gap in the Bow Valley is that the venues are beautiful but most have no on-site lodging and no getting-ready space - Silvertip says so plainly. A large private home solves it. The party preps together the morning of, in good light and real space. Everyone stays under one roof for the rehearsal dinner, the after-party and the slow morning-after brunch.
On private property the photos carry no permit problem and no shared-location risk. Serenity Point sits on Silvertip, sleeps fourteen, and is minutes from the resort's ceremony spaces - a base camp for the whole weekend.
When to marry
A wedding by season
Jan-Mar. Quietest, snow drama, lowest prices. Sky Bistro is available.
Apr-May. Shoulder season, snow-capped peaks with mild days. April is the cheapest month.
Jun-Aug. Turquoise lakes, light to 10pm, peak crowds. Books 12-18 months ahead.
Sep-Oct. The connoisseur pick. Early Sept is the sweet spot; golden larches mid-Sept to mid-Oct.

What it costs
The budget, honestly
Most Canmore and Banff weddings land between $30,000 and $70,000, driven mostly by guest count and venue.
- Catering. Broadly $50 to $200 a head; a useful benchmark is about $120 food plus $70 beverage per guest. Published Canmore menus run $69 to $99 a guest.
- Florals. $800 to $3,000 for decor-level design; full floral design runs higher. Linens $800 to $2,000.
- Guest count. Mountain-lodge weddings here typically run 35 to 100 guests; most planners cap around 200.
- Venue. The largest line, and many venues use a food-and-beverage minimum rather than a flat rental fee.

A planning timeline
Lock the date
Set the vision and budget with a 10-15% buffer. Book the venue first (summer dates go this far out), and if a private house is the base, hold it now.
Key vendors
Photographer, caterer, officiant, music. Send save-the-dates early for destination guests and reserve hotel blocks and the wedding-party home.
Design + permits
Florals, cake, hair and makeup, rentals. Start the Alberta licence plan and, for a park ceremony, the Parks Canada registration and photographer business licence.

Send invitations earlier than a local wedding. Finalize menu, bar, the day-of timeline built around daylight, and a real weather backup.
The licence
Collect the Alberta marriage licence (valid three months, no waiting period). Confirm park-ceremony guests hold entry passes. Rehearsal dinner at the house.

Permits & the licence
- Park ceremony registration. A ceremony on public park land is capped at 20, needs entry passes for all, allows only a small arch and acoustic music, and grants no sole use. Register with Parks Canada at banffadministration@pc.gc.ca.
- Commercial photography in the park. A photographer shooting to sell needs a Parks Canada business licence. A Canmore private estate sidesteps this entirely.
- Alberta marriage licence. Apply in person, both parties together, at any registry agent with photo ID. About $80 to $100 total, valid three months, no waiting period and no residency requirement - ideal for a destination wedding.
- Lodging. Town hotels and the whole-home market book 12 to 18 months ahead for summer. Reserve a block, and a large private home for the party, early.
