A family reunion
in the Rockies

Three generations, one trip. The activities that work across every age, the house that holds everyone, and a plan that does not exhaust anyone.

9 min read · Canmore & Banff

The hard part of a reunion is not the destination. It is keeping a grandparent, a toddler and a teenager happy on the same day. The Bow Valley does this unusually well, because so much of it is genuinely effortless.

The answer is one anchor activity a day and a house everyone shares for the hours in between. This guide covers the activities that span the generations, why a whole home is the right base, a light plan that holds, and the logistics that trip families up.

Reunions fail by over-scheduling. The best hours of the week will be the unplanned ones on the deck.
A mountain-home great room

One roof

A whole-home base

A single home is the bonding mechanism a hotel fractures across floors. Bedrooms arrange across generations, so grandparents get quiet while the kids and parents cluster. One kitchen and one long table turn meals into the event. And the house is the downtime hub: morning coffee on a deck, an afternoon nap for the elders and toddlers, the evening everyone drifts back together.

Serenity Point sleeps fourteen, and its Nordic spa is the private downtime anchor - the soak-and-recover ritual the whole family can share without leaving the house.

One anchor a day

A light plan

Day 1

Arrive

No agenda. Settle in, a group grocery run, the first shared dinner at the house, and a soak in the Nordic spa.

Day 2

The easy headline

Banff Gondola and a leisurely lunch at the top. Everyone, every age, zero exertion. Afternoon free.

Day 3

Water & wildlife

A Lake Minnewanka cruise with the Junior Explorer trip, or the Lake Louise gondola for grizzlies. Evening at the house.

Day 4

Split by energy

The active group takes Johnston Canyon or the Nordic Centre; the gentle group does Bow Falls and the hot springs. Regroup for dinner.

Day 5

The big lake

A pre-booked Moraine or Lake Louise shuttle in the morning, a lakeshore stroll, then back early to rest.

Keep one full unstructured day in the middle. Let the house, not a packed itinerary, be the gathering point.

Good to know

The logistics

  • Getting there and around. About 1 hr 20 from Calgary International. Rented SUVs or a van suit a group; Roam Transit Route 3 links Canmore and Banff, with kids under 12 free.
  • Group meals. A private chef in the house (try High Peaks Dining or Mountain Fire Foods), or a group table at The Iron Goat in Canmore, which has function rooms.
  • Best months. June to August for warm days and full lakes; September for thinning crowds and golden larches; winter for skiing and lower rates.
The one trap: Moraine Lake has no private-vehicle access at all. You must take the Parks Canada shuttle or transit, and shuttle reservations for 2026 open April 15. Book it the day it opens.
A timely bonus: the Canada Strong Pass gives free Banff National Park admission, and free Cave and Basin entry, from June 19 to September 7, 2026.

The base
